“Muck” is the black, smelly sludge at the bottom o “Muck” is the black, smelly sludge at the bottom of parts of the Indian River Lagoon.
Muck forms from years of stormwater pollution, sewage leaks, and yard debris settling on the lagoon floor. It blocks sunlight, smothers habitat, and prevents seagrass from growing.
Environmental dredging is underway to remove large deposits, but it’s slow and costly. The BEST fix is prevention.
🌿 Keep leaves, fertilizer, and grass clippings out of streets and waterways.
Pick up pet waste. Pet waste adds harmful nutrients and bacteria to waterways when it washes into drains.
Inspect hoses, irrigation lines, septic systems, and sewer laterals to ensure clean water stays where it belongs.
Create a buffer zone. Plant native grasses or shrubs along shorelines to catch runoff before it reaches the lagoon.
Every mindful choice helps keep new muck from forming and protects our lagoon for future generations.
